I think 20 November 2006 we can count as the day of the beginning of project ‘Different Train’. Our little photo exhibition
dedicated to Olita_Orany railroad line was exposed at bookstore
“Pegasas” window-case. It was the first public act of our big project
Olita_Orany.
Article about exhibition shared the page with an announcement of
concert by Chrodos strings quartet in the local newspaper “Alytaus
naujienos”. I could not remember now what attracted me more – interest
or obligation (trains were mentioned there :)) however I visit the
concert and unusual sounds of music made striking impression on me.
After couple of days together with my mate and ‘co-author’ Deividas
Pinkevicius we were listening Steve Reich’s
‘Different Trains’ (downloaded as MP3 files from the internet) and
fantasizing where this music could be performed as a part of our big
project. Almost summarily, we agree – it should be performed in an old
derelict railway station in Alytus.
By good luck (in this story are many good coincidents :)), we shared
our idea with Daiva Martikonyte - she organised the concert of 'Chordos'
(mentioned above) in Alytus City Theatre. E-message sent the same
evening lay us under obligation <<… 'Chordos' meets the idea with
fervour! ... >>.
That is how 'different train' make a move from our depot of dreams towards particular thing.
Hereafter - money. It is nothing new – incarnation of every idea is
coherent with smaller or bigger amount of money. Total costs of
'different train' were above our financial possibilities, so Deividas
and I decided, if we could not collect required amount of money until
July, we postpone the project to better times or cancel it. (Couple of
month before, after tuning up with 'Chordos’ timetable we set the
performance term on 25 August 2007.)
So… ordinary June evening Deividas and I made a visit to our mate
Arunas Pinkevicius. It was modest picnic: some wine, some fish, some
wine… Subsequently Gintaras ‘Bradūnas’ Zapolskas joined our company.
Maybe, because of neighbourhood with an old station (our picnic took
place at Saruno street few hundred meters from it), our talking point
turned to our railway ‘odyssey’. We introduced our idea of different
train and suddenly they said "There will be money. Do it!" No chance to
back-pedal.
So much about the beginning of the project. About our deeds while waiting for 'different train' later. »
